NO MONEY FOR REMUERA TRAM EXTENSIONS
NOT SPECIALLY VOTED DEPUTATION TO COUNCIL WHAT Mr. W. Skegg termed a ▼▼ “keen and live interest in the affairs of the city” resulted in the City Council chamber being crowded last evening by a deputation f*om Remuera East ratepayers. The deputation and the Mayor, Mr. G. Baildcn, had a difference almost before its members were in the room. Mr. Skegg said the ratepayers greatly desired to see the trams extended into their district. They suggested that the money, having already been voted, the extension should be made without another poll. The Mayor: There has never been any money specially voted for the Remuera extension. Please don’t mention it again. Mr. Skegg: We feel that the ratepayers have approved the extension, and that the extension should not be jeopardised again. The Mayor: Where are we going to get the money? Mr. Skegg: That is not for us to say. It was passed once. The Mayor: E>o not say that again. No money was specially raised for that work. Take it from me. Mr. Skegg: “We think the money was raised, and was used for other purposes. We feel we are entitled to the trams.” Mr. Skegg asked the council to speed up the Remuera trams, to cut out some of the stops instituted at the time of the bus competition, and to encourage settlement of the outer areas by giving lower tram fares. Mr. R. G. Slifield asked the council to give earnest consideration to the development of Waitarua Park. The Mayor informed the deputation that the tram extension could not be undertaken without another poll. Mr. Skegg appealed to the council not to lump the proposal with other proposals. Both questions were referred to the respective committees concerned. The Mayor stated that a suggestion to put unemployed on the park, was before tl e Unemployment Committee.
