DIVERSION IN PALMERSTON WELLINGTON TRAVELLER FINED Press Asso<rtation. PELMERSTON N., Thursday. The cancellation of his licence for six months and a fine of £lO were penalties imposed by just ces of the peace in the Police Court this morning on William Watson, a traveller from ■Wellington, who last evening drove a motor-car through the hedge of one of the Square gardens, circled the band rotunda, then drove out towards the post office. Defendant was charged with intoxication while in charge of a vehicle and having driven in a dangerous manner. A witness gave evidence that the car missed him by a foot on the footpath, while a police sergeant stated that defendant sobered up after the accident, probably through taking a “pick-me-up.” A doctor, giving evidence for the defendant, stated that when he was seen at the police station two hours later he was in a fit condition to drive a car and able to look after himself. Cross-examined, witness admitted defendant could have been drunk two hours previously. The Bench convicted the defendant, imposing the penalties stated.
