A Family Hockey Trio
Af O family of brothers is better known in Auckland hockey -*■ T than Harold , Eric and Clive Watts. Harold played hockey first when a boy at Grafton Primary School, where the stick game was in vogue to the exclusion of football. After three years he joined the Primary School Old Boys’ Hockey Club, founded by Mr. L. Howard Norton. After existing for two years, the name of the club teas changed to Somerville. Harold has played right icing for the white jerseys since he was a boy. « Eric took up the game at the same time as Harold and on leaving Grafton played two years for Technical College.
He then joined Somerville sth grade and worked his trap through all divisions until he played senior in 1920. Eric has represented Auckland since 1921 and New Zealand, from 1922-20. He could not. get away with the team which recently toured Australia. A SPRINTER. TOO. He is the only player in the country who. up till 1920, played in every test match. Eric is also a runner of note. He has held the Auckland amateur championships for 100 and 220 yards on various occasions. Clive first wielded the ash four years later than his brothers and on leaving Grafton went to Somerville. He has represented Auckland since 1921 and the Dominion since 1922. He achieved signal success during the recent All Black tour of Australia, and is a great goal getter. The trio are all keen cricketers.
