FLOODS RECEDE
DAMAGE NOT SO GREAT AS FEARED WIND DRIES UP FLATS Press Association. - WAIROA, To-day. Rain ceased late yesterday and during the night the flood waters receded. A strong southerly sprung up and quickly dried up the flats. The damage is not so great as was
feared, although boats, punts and launches were knocked about. One of the small jetties was carried away. Trees were uprooted, and gardens damaged. Several slips occurred on various roads. The Wairoa-Gisborne main highway is blocked at Tohara, but is expected to be cleared to-day. Heavy loss of stock is feared. The river bank is strewn with huge quantities of firewood, fencing materials, etc.
