feared, although boats, punts and launches were knocked about. One of the small jetties was carried away. Trees were uprooted, and gardens damaged. Several slips occurred on various roads. The Wairoa-Gisborne main highway is blocked at Tohara, but is expected to be cleared to-day. Heavy loss of stock is feared. The river bank is strewn with huge quantities of firewood, fencing materials, etc.
