PAPATOETOE RATING
A meeting, called by the Papatoetoe Town Board, was held in the Town Hall last night, when between 50 and 60 ratepayers attended to discuss the proposal to adopt unimproved rating. Mr. Aw. W. Hall, chairman of the town board, presided. As an opening shot, Mr. Dan Tye proposed that, in the opinion of those present, the time was not opportune for any change in the rating system. Messrs. Grierson, W. J. Nicholson, member of the town board, and Wilkinson suppoi'ted the motion and opposed rating on unimproved value as being unfavourable to the Papateotoe district. Mr. Leonard favoured rating on the unimproved values, and incidentally mentioned the case of one man buying land at £6O an acre 14 years ago, and now asking for £2,000 an acre. Mr. Hall spoke fully on the virtues of the present system. On being put to the vote, the motion that the time is not opportune to rate tlie district on the unimproved value, was declared carried on the voices. The peition asking for a poll to be taken on the question is to be presented to the board shortly. It bears over 300 names of ratepayers, and it is the intention of the promoters to call a meeting shortly, and have the virtues of tlneir system placed before the ratepayers of the district.
