“ENCROACHMENT OF BOARD’S PRIVILEGES”

LACK OF COMMUNICATION EDUCATION DEPT. CRITICISED THE lack of communication between the Education Department and the Auckland Grammar Schools Board was deplored by the chairman,, Professor A. P. W. Thomas at the .board's meeting yesterday. He referred to a letter received from Mr. T. B. Strong, Director of Education, who said the department could not assist the body with a grant for the formation of playing fields at the Takapuna Grammar School. Strong exception was taken to the attitude of Mr. Strong itt failing to call on the board to discuss the question, when he was recently in Auckland. It was reported that the title deeds of the hostel at Mount Albert had been received from the department. As £6,750 had been paid to the department, on condition that the title deed of the property be transferred to the board, it was decided to communicate the terms of the agreement to the Minister. It was decided to support the attitude of the Canterbury Education Board in protesting against the encroachment of the department upon the powers and privileges of education boards. Being unaaware that educational bodies were exempted from paying stamp duties, it was decided to apply to the Stamps Department for a refund of £124 paid for stamps during the past three years.
