Raglan Prospects
Lobby Speculation (THE SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. A L '“ parties in the House of J ' Representatives are keenly intere:sted in the prospects of the poll at Raglan, and although very little mention of the by-election is made in the House of Representatives, individual members are discussing in the lobbies prospects of the five candidates. In Lobby discussions very little is heard of the chances of the Independent Reform candidate who is regarded more in the light of an inconvenience to be discounted as a factor in the final reckoning. Some strong Reform Party supporters entertain vague apprehensions that he might poll sufficient to nullify the effect of the party support to Mr. Waring, while the Country Party man might take a few farmer* votes from Mr. Coates. Confidence is felt in Reform ranks that pro-Coates and .antiCoates votes will be so equally divided that the issue will be almost a clear one for or against the Government. Tiie lone Liberal voice, crying in the political wilderness for assistance, sounds hopeful rather than sanguine of the chances of his candidate. Labour is confident at this end, because it is believed by party adherents that all the other candidates will take votes from the official Government candidate.
