ISOLATED ST. HELIERS

IT is very regrettable that the Devonport Ferry Company cannot see its way to restore the service between the City and Kohimarama and St. Heliers. The beautiful St. Heliers District is at present partially isolated. Ferry boats no longer make the direct and comfortable trip down the harbour, and residents have’to depend upon a motor-bus service, which is not only- costly, but entails considerably more mileage than the water journey. The railway will improve the position greatly, but that is a long way from completion and meanwhile the residents of the district are put to much inconvenience and settlement is retarded. It is again suggested that the Devonport Ferry Company- might see its way clear to cater for those who prefer the water journey by establishing a fairly full service at week-ends and on holidays, and a skeleton service for regular travellers during the week. Of course, it cannot be expected that the company run steamers at a loss, but it might be found possible to organise a limited service at fares slightly in advance of those formerly charged. Such a service should ultimately become profitable with the growth of these fine marine suburbs.
