ry'UE Avondale Jockey Club’s totalisator investments dropped by £30,060 10s on Saturday and Monday when compared with the Spring meeting held at Ellerslie twelve months previously. Yesterday the sum of £>50.068 10s icent through the machine , making the total investments £105,428 , against £136,388 10s last year. The weather was fine and the attendance fairly good. Heavy rain on Sunday was responsible for the going being even slower than on opening day.
Kendal A:n Easy Winner Seven started in the Ivingsland 1 Hurdles, the order of betting being York Abbey £1941. Kamehameha £799 ’ and Kendal £7lB. Te Tahi was in front at the end of half a mile, pursued by York Abbey. Kendal. Rahepoto, Kamehameha, Master Noel and GJenotus. Passing the stands the first time Te Tahi was half a dozen lengths clear of Kendal, Glenotus and Master Noel next. The last-named fell at the fence at the six-furlong post. Here Kendal took charge, and was the first into the straight from Te Tahi, Glenotus, York Abbey, Kamehameha and Raliepoto, and was not troubled to win by ten lengths. Glenotus got up second, and Te Tahi was 15 lengths away third. Kamehameha, who jumped very badly, was fourth, and York Abbey and Raliepoto next in order. Youngster Finishes Strongly Of the nine runners in the Nursery Handicap, the bracket Orewa and Look Out carried most money, being entrusted with £1,033. Second Wind was a firm second choice, carrying £ 901, and outside these Flying Binge £669 was the only other seriously considered. Look Out stood on the mark when the barrier went up, and lost some lengths. Nankin Blue, Red Lion, Second Wind and Metonic went out very quickly, and they raced in close order to the half-mile, where Second Wind got through on the rails and showed the way into the straight from Red Lion, Flying Binge, Look Out, Armenia, Orewa and Metonic. At the distance Second Wind was well clear, but then commenced to run about, and at the same time Orewa put in a strong claim, coming o.n to win by a length from Second Wind. Nankin Blue was seven lengths away in third place, and the next to cross the line were Flying Binge, Look Out, Armenia, Red Lion and Metonic. The winner is a smart filly by Valkyrian from Hinerewa, and finished on gamely under pressure. Waltzer’s Good Effort A big field of 22 contested the Mount Albert Handicap, Royal Doulton, £ 1,036, being favourite, with good money on hand also for Judge’s Box £ 800, Takarunga £739, Waltzer £496, and Bahama £ 491. At the start Royal Doulton whipped back and lost a lot of ground, Glenetta also getting away badly. Yaqui got away smartly from Whaka King, Waltzer, Abbey Day, Bahama, Diamond Queen and Luxurious. At the end of a furlong Whaka King took charge, showing .the way past the four furlongs to Waltzer, Diamond Queen, Yaqui, Bahama, Creation, Luxurious and Abbey Day. Into the straight the order was Whaka King, Waltzer, Creation, Bahama, Yaqui, Diamond Queen, Abbey Day, Judge’s Box and Fiery Lad. There was a good tussle up the running between Waltzer and Whaka King, the former prevailing by a head. Bahama was a length and a-half away, just in front of Judge’s Box. Next to cross the line were Creation, Luxurious, Fiery Lad, Takarunga, Bright Dawn, La Roma, Rarakau and Royal Doulton. The winner drew the extreme outside position. Royal Mint Improves Le Choucas was the sole defection from the Plumpton Handicap, and of 15 runners most money was on hand for Cohesion, £1,395, Eden Hall, £1,350, Royal Mint £l,OlO, Mask £694, Master Doon £558 and Alio way £502. At the start Eden Hall got chopped , out and Mint L€*af was slow to move, i Llandudno was out in front from the start, leading past the post the first , time from Allowa.y, Queen Arch, Master : Doon, Lord Star, Barometer, Mask, , Cohesion, Star Stranger, Royal Mint ; and Pelham. Running to the six fur- ! longs Llandudno was still bowling along in the van, attended by Alio way, Queen Arch, Cohesion, Master Doon, Barometer, Mash, Royal Mint and Star : Stranger. There was little alteration ) passing the half mile, Llandudno com- , ing round the home bend ahead ot r Queen Arch. Barometer, Golden Krist, I Mint Leaf, Royal Mint and Alloway. ’ Once straightened up Llandudno was : well back, and then Royal Mint and Golden Krist came through, the former i winning by two and a half lengths. Lord Star was a length and a half behind Golden Krist, and the next home . were Cohesion, Mint Leaf, Barometer, ; Alloway, Queen Arch, Master Doon, Llandudno and Eden Hall. The second horse carried only £75, and paid a big double figure dividend. LAUGHING PRINCE WINS GUINEAS A good field of half a dozen ?ame out for the Avondale Guineas, the course scratchings being Star God, Paganelli, and The Fox. Laughing Prince was backed down to a cramped price, carrying £2,313, while others supported were Catkin, £1,176, Great Charter, £942, and In The Shade, £745. A perfect start saw Carinthia go out quickly from Laughing Prince. Great Charter, Catkin, Thaw, and In The Shade, there being little between them. At the six furlongs In The Shade was making play from Catkin, Laughing Prince, Thaw, Carinthia, and Great Charter, five lengths separating the field. Passing the half-mil**. In The Shade was still in charge, with Catkin and Thaw together next, Laughing Prince, Carinthia, and Great Charter following. The last-named came through on the rails on the home turn, and was actually the leader into the straight. Catkin, Laughing Prince. Carinthia, In The Shade, and Thaw lying next. When they had straightened up. Laughing Prince was on terms with Great Charter, and, drawing away from this out, won by two and a-half lengths from Great Charter with Catkin a similar distance away third. In The Shade was another five lengths further off, with Carinthia next, and Thaw last. The sectional times were: First furlong. 14 2-ssec; two furlongs, 28sec; three furlongs, 42sec; four furlongs, 53sec: five furlongs, 1.12; and the mile, 1.55 Sir Archie’s Surprise The open sprint, the President’s Handicap, attracted a field of 14. Delightment and Tinokoa had a duel for favouritism, the pair carrying £1,644, and £1,340 respectively when the totalisator closed. Also in demand were Day Guard £1,061 and Town Guard £BBO. There was some delay at the start, and when they were let go Delightment hit the front first from Nancy Lee, Tinokoa, Day Guard, Finelli, Town Guard and King Emerald. At the end
of a furlong Finelli took up the running from Day Guard, Nancy Lee and Delightment, who were in close order, with Town Guard, King Emerald, Tinokoa, Oration and Automne following. Delightment was the first to turn into the straight from Finelli, Nancy Lee, King Emerald. Sir Archie and Tinokoa. Once in line Sir Archie went to the front, and went on to win comfortably by three lengths from Delightment, who failed to reproduce his finishing effort of the first day. Nancy Lee was three parts of a length away in third berth, with Tinokoa fourth, the next in order being King Emerald, Town Guard, High Pitch, Day Guard, Oration, Benzora, Finelli, Kingfield and Berinthia. The winner paid a double-figure dividend. Hack Mile to Alonsoa Of the ten runners in the New Lynn Handicap, War Officer, £1,258 was a bigger fancy than Sovena, £1,257 and Branson, £1197. Arch Queen was the first to move, being followed out of the barrier by Alonsoa, Killute, War Officer, Acushla, Branson and Sovena. At the six furlongs Acushla had taken charge from Arch Queen, War Officer, Killute, Wyoming, Alonsoa and Sovena. Into the straight Killute was in front, being folliwed in close order by Wyoming, Alonsoa, War Officer, and. Arch Queen, with Branson, Acushla, Arinagour and Sovena following. At the bottom of the straight Alonsia joined Killute, the former coming on to win by two and a-half lengths. Arch Queen was a similar distance away, with Wyoming, War Officer, Branson, Acushla, Arinagour and Sovena next in order. GALA DAY AT LAST Gala Day, £1,703, and King Smock, £1,660, carried most money in the concluding event, the Nihotapu Handicap. Nucleus, Gala Day, Phaola, Siaosi, King Day, Quincoma, Thursby, Siaosi, Sleepy Sol. Phaola and King Smock. At the five furlongs Nucleus was out in front of Thursby, Gala Day, Sleepy Sol, Siaosi, Phaola and Tinoiti. Thursby got out clear crossing the top, and he showed the way into the straight from Nucleus, Gala Day, Phaola, Siaosi, iKng Smock, Quincoma and Tinoiti. At the distance Gala Day, Nucleus and Thursby were in a line, and in a rough finish Thursby, cramped lor room on the rails, dropped back, and Gala Day obtained a head decision over Nucleus. Thursby was four lengths away, and Phaola, King Smock, Quincoma, Tinoiti and Siaosi next. An inquiry into some interference at the finish of this event was held, but no action was taken. Mr. Cameron says he is disappointed with the running of The Hawk on Saturday, and will not take him to Melbourne as he had proposed to do for the Victoria Racing Club’s October Slakes on Saturday next. If The Hawk does go to the southern capital it will not be until Merry Mint goes to run in the Derby. First Acre has been scratched for the Epsom, the Metropolitan, the Caulfield Cup and the Melbourne Cup.
