ROADS AND COUNCILS

The policy recently adopted by the A.A.A., that on new road work a grade of 1-20 with straight roads is preferable to a grade of 1-16 with bad corners, was endorsed by the North Island Motor Union at its last meeting at ; Napier. The lax .observance of the offside rule by tramwaymen was commented on at the last meeting of the council of the A.A.A. Quite a number of cases were quoted to show that many tramwaymen paid no attention to the rule. Another subject which came up was the careless way in which buses were allowed to stop in Queen Street to pick up passengers. The A.A.A. had previously drawn the attention of the City Council to this, and at the meeting a letter was recived stating that vthe city engineer had the question in hand. BRIDGE OVER MOKAU The new bridge over the Mokau River on the overland trip to New Plymouth is now nearing completion, and to the casual observer little remains to be done. It is expected that the bridge will be open to traffic about the middle of October. ROAD TO EGMONT VILLAGE MOUNTAIN HOUSE There are various opinions about the condition of the road up to the Egmont Village Mountain House, which is situated 3,100 feet above sea level on the northern slopes of Mount Egmont. The general report is that the road is bad, so the service officer of the A.A.A. made a special trip over the road recently in order to get accurate information. He reports that the road is good up to the gate at the beginning of th singleway track. The next four miles is a beautiful run through native mountaini>ush and for the most part the road is in good order. The steepest pinches are being maitained with fillings of large metal. The road is much like that which runs through Huntly (although there are no pothloes), but motorists who are used to Auckland roads would consider this part in really good order. In Taranaki, however, the people are so keen on good roads that they are having this stretch tar-sealed this summer, which will, provide an exclient road to this popular summer and winter resort. BRIDGE WANTED NEAR KAIHERE The necessity for the construction of a bridge over the Piako River near the Kaihere landing on the Hauraki Plains to afford settlers an outlet from their setlements in the winter months was urged at a meeting of the Thames Chamber of Commerce. It was pointed out that a metalled road was deteriorating for lack of traffic, because there was no brWge to serve it, and it was necessary to travel via Morrinsville to reach any centre of the Hauraki Plains, Patetonga, Mangawhero- or Kaihere. A road deviation now being constructed would considerablj' reduce the distance from Patetonga to Thames, provided a bridge was built near Kaihere. The chamber decided to make inquiries. One thing about the women, they certainly are not one-arm drivers, but they cause a lot of one-arm driving. ■k * * Mother: Archibald Giltrocks, what do you mean, talking to your sister that, way?’* "We’re playing I’m a traffic cop, Ma.”
