STOCK EXCHANGE VOTES CONDOLENCE
MR. JOHN FRATER’S DEATH Reference to the passing or one of the founders of the Auckland Stock, Exchange, in the person of the late Mr. i John Prater, was made at this morn- j ing’s early call. Members spoke of the high esteem • in which he had been held by all sec- j tions of the business. A motion of | condolence with the relatives was car- j ried in the usual manner. Mr. John Frater, who until a few years ago was one of the best known business men in Auckland, died at his home yesterday at the age of 96. Born at Selkirk, Scotland, Mr. Frater came to Auckland in 1863, when the Maori War was in progress. He at once enlisted in the militia. When the war concluded, he entered the service of the Public Works Department of the Auckland Provincial Council. Mr. Frater joined in the rush to the Thames goldfield at the end of 1867 and. for some years worked interests which he held in claims. With his brother, Mr. W. Frater, he then took up sharebroking. Coming to Auckland toward the end of the ’Bo’s, they carried on business here until age forced them to retire. Since his retirement Mr. Frater had lived at his home at Stanley Bay. He did not take part in public life, but while at Thames was an office-bearer of St. James’s Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Frater, formerly Miss Macky, a member of a well-known Auckland family, predeceased her husband about 12 years ago. Mr. Frater leaves no family,. Zealand coal was used in this couni try. and with the scientific research i introduced by his party he hoped that |in two years this result would be j effected. ! A vote of thanks was carried with acclamation.
