Avondale Meeting Opened at Ellerslie
GOOD RACING ON HEAVY TRACK THE Spring meeting of the Avondale Jockey Club was opened at Ellerslie on Saturday. The weather was squally at the outset, but cleared after the third race. The course was in a heavy state. Betting was brisk, taking- the decreased attendance into account, £54,759 10s going through the totalisator, compared with £72,935 on the opening day, also at Ellerslie, twelve months ago. Notes on the racing and details of later results follow.
Levenside and Royal Doulton Win. The starters in the Maiden Plate were two over the safety number, so the race was run in two divisions as previously arranged. Best backed of the 32 runners were the brackets Whaka King—Yaqui £420, Restaurant —Royal Doultori £ 395 and Levenside— Master Noel £240, and Valentino— Wyoming £lB2. In the first division Scaramouche, Whaka King, Royal Doulton, Master Noel, Yaqui, Edifice and Arinagour were the leading divi-
sion scon after the start. At the five furlongs Whaka King was clear, and, he ran past the five furlongs followed by Yaq L ui, Master Noel, Levenside, Edifice, Scaramouche and Charitaine. As they came round the home turn there was little between Whaka King and Yaqui, their closest attendants being Master Noel, Levenside, and Edifice, with a gap back to Arinagour. Whaka King was quickly beaten in the straight,, and Levenside came with a good late run to score from Yaqui by half a length. Whaka King was three lengths away third, and the next to cross the line were Master Noel, Edifice, Acushla, Charitaine and Simplicitas. Second Division After going a* furlong in the second division the order of the was Taurimu, Diamond Queen, Cynthia N, Brampton, Royal Doulton and Salamander. Diamond Queen led past the four furlongs, just in front of Brampton with Taurimu, Cynthia N, Royal Doulton and Wyoming next. Diamond Queen and Brampton were still together at the entrance to the straight, with Royal Doulton and Wyoming coming through, and Taurimu, Cynthia N and Ash Tray next. Once in line Royal Doulton made her run, and finishing on won by a length from Restaurant, who was finishing fast, and with Wyoming four lengths away third. Diamond Queen was fourth, and was followed home by Cynthia N, Ash Tray and Good Boy. Hurdles to Karamu. Seven started in the Grey Lynn Hurdles, York Abbey £1,068, Rahepoto £1.007, Kamehameha £874 and Glenotus £486, carrying most money. York Abbey went out to make the pace from Blago, Karamu, Stonewall, Rahepoto and Kamehameha, but at the end of six furlongs Karamu took up the running, leading past stands from York Abbey, Rahepoto, Kamehameha and Blago. Karamu was still in charge crossing the top and into the straight, where he had a slight advantage over Rahepoto and Kamehameha, with York Abbey next and Glenotus coming. A dog at the last fence interfered with Kamehameha
and then York Abbey, the latter falling, and in a good set-to between Karamu and Rahepoto the former won by a length and a-half. Kamehameha was another length away, with Glenotus another length away fourth. Stonewall and Blago pulled up.
King Smock Scores Thirteen came out for* the Members’ Handicap, best backed being Automne £1,231, Gold Acre £l,OOl, Gala Day £728. King Smock £659, and Day Guard £561. A good start saw Arch Queen in the front early, soon to be displaced, Value acting the role of pacemaker when they settled down, followed by Gold Acre, Day Guard, Gala Day, Waltzer, Mosaic and Qumcoma. This was the order past the four furlong post, with little change in the positions. Value piloted Day Guard into the straight, Waltzer, King Smock, Quincoma and Gala Day following, the last-named falling just as they straightened up. At the distance King Smock and Waltzer drew out, and in a good finish the former won by half a length. Day Guard was a couple of lengths away third, with Automno fourth. Then came Quincoma, Mosaic, Value, Arch Queen, Berinthia. Carinthia and Luxurious, with Gold Acre last. The second horse was at a big price. Cup to Te Kara Star Stranger was the only drawal from the Avondale Cup, and in a big pool most money came for Master Loon, who was entrusted with £1 338, while there was also good money for Te Kara, £1,144: Te Monanui, £1,009; Mask, £973; and Alloway, £961 A good start saw Cohesion lead into the straight the first time from Master Doom Te Kara, Te Monanui and Desert Glow. Cohesion led past the post and out of the straight, being followed by Queen Arch, Master Doon, Te Kara, Eden Hall, Te Monanui, Desert Glow. Lord Star, Royal Mint and Alloway, with Mask and Mint Leaf the last pair. At the six furlongs Cohesion was still malting play from Queen Arch, with Eden Hall next. Master Doon, Te Kara, Desert Glow, Te Monanui. Alloway and Lord Star being the order of
the others. Alloway made an effort and was lying fifh at he half mile, this being the only alteration. Cohesion still had charge into the straight, with Te Kara on the outside of him, and Queen Arch, Eden Hall, Alloway, Mask. Royal Mint, Mint Leaf and Desert Glow next in order. At the distance Te Kara and Cohesion were level, and they had the finish between themselves, Te Kara triumphing by a neck. Eden Hall was two lengths away third, and Royal Mint was a close fourth. There was a gap of five lengths back to Mint Leaf and Mask, and the next to finish were Alloway, Queen Arch, Lord Star, Desert Glow and Te Monanui, with Master Doon last. The win was a very popular one. Prodice’s Smart Performance Fifteen started in the Avondale Stakes, among the defections being Knightlike. Freehold was always favourite, being entrusted with £1,481, with some money also on hand for Prince Humphrey £933, Chit £B5l, Prodice £664 and Episode £537. At the start Lucy Rose dwelt. Chit was quickly in front from Freehold, Flying Binge, Valour, Prince Humphrey, Catonian, Prodice and Episode. Passing the half-mile Flying Binge had taken up the running, but she then began to stop. Chit was the first to turn for home, being followed by Flying Binge, Freehold, Valour, Prodice, Catonian, Prince Humphrey, King Val, Marion’s Birthday and Episode. Chit began to show signs of distress a furlong from home, and first Prodice and then Freehold passed her. Prodice went on and won by a length and a-half from Freehold, with Prince Humphrey finishing fast a neck away, just in front of Chit. Next in order were Valour, Marion’s Birthday, Catonian, Episode, Moehau, Flying Binge. Avon Court and Kingsland. The winner is a full sister to Phaola, who won the Avondale Stakes two years ago. Brilliant Town Guard Delightment opened a very shortpriced favourite for the Flying Stakes, but his price lengthened before closing time, at which stage he carried £1,776, with Laughing Prince next best supported, to the extent of £1,321. There was also some money for Covent Garden £751, Oration £7lB, Tinokoa £664, In the Shade £644, and Town Guard £ 625. At the start Kingfield and Sir Archie got the worst of it. Covent Garden led out from Nancy Lee, In the Shade, Tinokoa, Oration, Town Guard, Laughing Prince and Delightment. the field stringing out. At the half-mile Covent Garden and Nancy Lee were together in the van, with Town Guard next, and Oration, Tinokoa, Laughing Prince, In the Shade, Kingfield, Delightment and Sir Archie following. Covent Garden then stopped very quickly, and the order into the straight was Nancy Lee, Town Guard, Oration, Tinokoa, Laughing Prince, Sir Archie, In the Shade, Covent Garden and Delightment. At the distance Town Guard, Nancy Lee and Tinokoa were fighting it out, with Delightment coming from a long way back. Town Guard then drew out and went on to win by three parts of a length from the unlucky Delightment. with Nancy Lee a similar distance away third. Tinokoa was fourth, and then came Laughing Prince, Oration, Sir Archie, In the Shade, Covent Garden, Kingfield and Benzora, with High Pitch pulling qp last. War Officer Scores Of the 16 runners in the Swanson Handicap, most money was forthcoming for Takarunga £2039, Modest Boy £1,454, War Officer £946 and Sovena £999. Modest Boy was the first to show out from Killute, Sovena, War Officer, Bahama, Fiery Lad and Takarunga. A little further on Bahama had gone to join Modest Boy and Killute in the lead, these three being in charge at the six furlongs from Fiery Lad Takarunga, War Officer, Rarakau, Blue Sky, Alonsoa, Sovena and Star Comet. There was little alteration crossing the top other than that Branson improved his position. Into the straight the order was Killute, Modest Boy, Bahama, Blue Sky, Rarakau, War Officer, Fiery Lad afid Branson. Several were in line when they had straightened up but at the furlong War Officer began to come through on the inside, and hanging on won by three parts of a length from Sovena, with Fiery Lad half a length away. Next were Bahama, Star Comet, Kendal, Branson, Modest Boy, Rarakau and Killute. Alonsoa fell in the straight, and Te Tahi came down over him. King Lu Easily King Lu, £1,542, wound up a good favourite in the Henderson Handicap, with sound support forthcoming for the Damaris—Thaw bracket, £1,487 and the Llandudno—Ballachulish> bracket, £1,497. Transformer, Thursby and Vivo lost some ground at the start, Tinoiti, King Lu, Llandudno. Archeno, Nucleus, Pelham, Nippy, Ballachulish and Damaris being the strung out order at the end of a furlong. At the half mile Thaw was making the pace from Llandudno, Tinoiti, Nucleus, King Lu, Nippy, Pelham, Archeno, Ballachulish and Damaris. There wns practically no change as they swung into the straight, the bunch gradually closing on the leaders. Once heads were turned for home King Lu came through, and running away over the final furlong scored by five lengths. A rank outsider in Nucleus was second, half a length in front of Archeno, who weakened in the run in. Tinoiti was a good fourth, and Llandudno, Phaola, Barometer, Golden Krist, Thaw, Pelham, Ballachulish, Thursby and Transformer were the next to cross the line in that order.
