“500” EVENING IN AID OF CROQUET CLUB An enjoyable evening was held on Thursday last at the residence of Mrs. H. Rieper, there being 36 guests present. The ladies’ prizes were won by Mrs. Coker first, Mrs. N. Lynch second and Miss ID. Anderson consolation. The men’s prizes were won bv Mr. Sefton first, Mrs. W. H. Sandford second, Mr. N. Lynch third. Mr. W. H. Sandford, in presenting the prizes jocularly said that the dread croquet season was almost upon us again, when there would be many tealcss husbands, and manhood again would have to take up housekeeping. However, he was pleased to add that he was sure the ladies would benefit greatly in health and spirits by indulging in the game of croquet, and that all those present would be pleased t.o render what help they could to the ladies’ croquet c lub. The result of the evening was very gratifying, and will add the sum of about A: 4 to the purchase of balls for the coming season. Mrs. Gieson caused much amusement by ‘reading” teacups for the younger people. PLUNKET SOCIETY The monthly meeting was held at the Plunket Rooms, Miro Street, Ohakune. There were present Mesdames Fetzer, Woodloek. Hussey, McGregor P Cronin and A. Laming. The nurse’s report for the month was read and adopted. A letter of resignation was received from Mrs. Carver, which was accepted with regret. Accounts for payment, including nurse’s salary, were passed for payment. With thanks to the chair, the meeting terminated. The nurse’s report was as follows: Ohakune: Old cases 139, new cases 3. Raetihi: Old Horopito: Old cases 21, new cases 2. Rangataua: Old cases 24. Pokaka: Old cases 25, new cases 1. NOVELTY SHOW • A novelty show, under the capable direction of Miss Cranston, was held on Thursday evening in aid of the Waimarino Brass Band, at the Patriotic Hall, Ohakune. The entertainment was of a novel character, and consisted of many interesting items, including “Britannia’s Court.” those taking part in this tableau being Mesdames F. Coury, J. P. Cottier, W. Hussey, Misses D. Wood, E. Standish, A. Laming, M. Lightband, Master H. Gould, and J. Carroll. Other items were::—A sailor’s hornpipe, by M. Carver; Welsh jig, M. Carver; recitation, O. Larsen; Scots reel, M. Dance; step-dance, Joy Gordon and Ngaio Brooks; piano solo. Miss V. Clemett; Irish jig. Master A. McCowan; song by the children; dance, E. Laming. In the second part of the programme Miss Cranston, assisted by Miss D. Foster, presented a song scena, entitled “Pale Moon '; lullaby, Mrs. Cottier ami the children: play. "The Backward Child,” E. List and D. Pearce; piano solo. Miss V. Clemett: song, Mr. H Pearce; and a play, entitled “The Crystal Gazer.” Miss Cranston and Mrs. Hussey, concluded a most successA entertainment. The items were well received by an appreciative audience, and many of the artists received well-merited encores.
