WORKERS’ TRAM TICKETS
REQUEST FOR ALTERATIONS Miss Alice Basten, having been approached by the Tailoresses’ Union and others to take up the matter of workers' tickets under the scheme coming into operation on the Ist prox., being available only at starting point not later than 8 a.m. instead of 8.30 a.m. as at present, has placed the position before the chairman of the Tramways Committee, Mr. J. A. C. Allum. It 'was pointed out that tailoresses on piece work, dentists’ assistants, a certain proportion of milliners and dressmakers, shop girls and office assistants, would require either to wait about for half an hour before commencing work, or have to pay practically full cash fare, the value of the new concessions being negligible. Those who do not start work until nine o’clock, leaving Onehunga at 8 a.m. will have to wait aboLit for 19 minutes; Mount Albert, 32 minutes; Remuera, 34 minutes; and Great South Roa.d, 37 minutes—a highly uncomfortable wait in weather such as has been recently experienced. Miss Basten suggested that if the department could not accede to this request for all workers affected, perhaps it could be considered in relation to all workers under 21 in receipt of £2 or less. The chairman said that although he could not alter the proposed arrangements at present, he would be prepared to give the matter early consideration.
