PROTEST AGAINST RELIEF WAGES

LARGE QUAY ST. MEETING Protests against relief wage rates and continued immigration were registered by a large meeting held on Quay Street yesterday afternoon. Despite the rain a large attendance came out. The following were the speakers: Messrs. D. Martin, J. Purtell, A. Richards, J. Basham, A/Brown and Gavin C. Stove. It was stated in reference to relief wages that work on the railway deviation, which had been estimated for on full union rates, was being paid relief rates. The following resolution was passed: •That this meeting of citizens of Auckland records its emphatic protest against the continued policy of the Government of paying relief wages at the rate of 9s and 12s a day: and it further protests against these rate. l being operative on standard works on which the labour cost has been estimated in the original estimates on award rates of wages. It also protests against the continued policy of assisted immigration as being contrary to the best interests of New Zealand and unjust to the immigrants."
