SPECTACULAR PLAY IN DUNEDIN TRIAL
HIGH-SCORING MATCH DUNEDIN, Saturday. The first South Island All Black trial match was played on Carisbrook today before about 8,000 spectators. The ground was in fine order, and a sparkling exhibition of the Rugby code Was given. In the first spell the Canterbury players had slightly the better of the exchanges, and led at half-time by 11 points to 10. In the second spell the game wzls very fast, each team scoring in turn, the Northern team eventually Avinning by 30 points to 25. The teams were: Canterbury, South Canterbury, and Ashburton: Lilburne, Robilliard, Steel, Carleton, Robilliard, Strong, Dailey, Burrows, QJark, Alley, Godfred, Stewart, McKenna, Mulhern, Scrimshaw. O.ago, Southland, and North Otago: Hazlewood, McClymont, Lindsay, Murray, Stewart, Loder, Holden, Ilindenach, Mills, Cameron, Hazlett, Bird. Marslin, Johnston. The Otago - Southland combination kicked off, and after some ragged play had to force. Then Strong took a mark eight yards inside halfway, and kicked a beautiful goal. The Canterbury side kept the attack up, and eventually Steel! ran over unopposed at the corner.
From the kick-off Lindsay and Marslin showed out. Holden *ecured the ball, and, drawing the defence, gave Marslin a clear run in. Lindsay converted. Shortly afterwards Burrows scored. Lilburne converted. Otago set up a hot; attack. Lilburne was caught in possession of the ball under the goal posts. Bird dived over the line. Lindsay converted, making the half-time scores: Canterbury, 11; Otago, 10. On resuming, Mitchell replaced Locer, and Finlayson replaced Mills, while Carleton went to inside fiveeighth and J. Robilliard played centre. The Otago forwards Avent away in a slashing loose rush, and Marslin scored. Li rid.say converted. The Otago forwards Avere uoav playing better. and were holding the opposing pack. However, Carleton started a. passing bout at halfAvay, and Strong scored between the posts. Lilburne converted. Following a scramble in Otago’s twenty-five, the ball went to Steel, who notched another try. Canterbury, 19; Otago, 15. IX Stewart had to retire, and was replaced by Jeffries. Following fast play, Lindsay kicked a great penalty goal. The Otago backs Avent away in a passing rush, and Lilburne redeavoured to clear. Hazelwood received the ball, and coolly dropped a great goal from 40 yards out. Otago, 22; Canterbury, 19. The pace was now very fast. J. Robilliard made a great dash into the Otago twenty-five, where he passed to Scrimshaw, who dived o\'er at the corner. Strong converted with a great kick. Hindenach and Johnston led a loose forward rush to the Caiiterbury twenty-five, but J. Robilliard cleared. Dailey sent his backs away at the halfway, and Carleton cross-kicked to A. C. Robilliard, Avho rushed over at the corner. A little later, following a Canterbury attack, Dailey picked up the ball and dived oA*er the line. The Otago backs went away in a passing rush, and McClymont, at the end of the line, swerved over, to score the best try of the game. Lindsay failed to convert, and the game ended: Canterbury, 30; Otago, 25.
