TAUMARUNUI BOROUGH

ONGARUE RIVER BRIDGE The Mayor, Mr. G. E. Munson, presided over the fortnightly meeting of the Taumarunui Borough Council. In reply to a request from the hospital board it was decided to lend tli«r roller and heating plant, and also to supply crushed metal, in connection with the tennis court, which is to be put down at the hospital for the use of the nurses. A sum of £6OO is to be paid to the Public Works? Department as progress payment on th* council’s share of the cost of the new Ongarue River bridge, and the balance of the loan raised for this work will be placed on fixed deposit. It was resolved to inform the chamber of commerce that as the NgaLii Street extension is not a dedicated road the council cannot take any action in the matter of putting it in order. A strong complaint from Mr. W. F. Ford regarding a drain in front of his property, which he alleged was a menace to public health and likely to cause depreciation of his place, was referred to the Works Committee, after Cr. Broad stated the drain had been inspected and appeared to be in good order. It was decided to purchase £4 10s worth of new books for the municipal library. In regard to a request from the local cricketers for putting parts of thes recreation ground in order for thissporL. it was resolv««l that the other sports bodies be consulted prior to any action being taken. The foreman reported, inter alia, that the river-bank protection work in the vicinity of Mr. Fletcher’s property in Turaki Street was making good progress. An application from Mr. S. Williams for a building permit in Manuaute: Street was; refused on the ground that the section of land was too small to comply with the by-laws.
