Miss Payton Wins Golf Title
WAIKATO TOURNEY AN EXCELLENT SCORE (From Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, Friday. The final of the Hamilton Ladies’ Golf championship tournament for the Ellis Cup was decided at St. Andrew’s this afternoon, in good golfing weather, between Miss M. Payton (Rotorua) and Mrs. Mander (Hamilton), the former winning 7 up and 6 to play. From the first tee Mrs. Mander sent away a nice drive, which landed 10 feet away from the pin. Miss Payton was short and Mrs. Mander took the hole in a well-played bogey 3, to her opponent’s four. Going to the second Mrs. Mander pushed her drive out, while she got into trouble with her second. Miss Payton, playing steady golf, was down in five to her opponent’s six and made the game all square. At the next«hole Miss Payton missed an opportunity for a win and each got five. Playing to the fourth Mrs. Mander got off the line early, while Miss Payton, playing beautiful golf, won the hole 3—5, and advanced to 1 up. The fifth was halved in fives. The superior golf of Miss Payton was again in evidence at the sixth, which the Rotorua player took with a wellplayed 3 to bogey 4, while her opponent recorded 5 at this hole. Through erring in the earlier part of her approach work to the long seventh, Mrs. Mander had always an uphill fight at this hole, which Miss Payton also won, her score being 6 to Mrs. Mander’s 8. MISS PAYTON GOES AHEAD With a fine long putt Mrs. Mander made a great effort to halve the eighth, but she . was not successful, Miss Payton winning this hole in 4—5. The good golf of the latter again gave her victory at the ninth, and the players commenced the inward journey with Miss Payton five up. The latter’s score for the outward nine holes was 40, which equalled bogey. They halved the 10th in bogey 4, while Miss Payton won the 11th in a finely-played four, this placing her six up and seven to play. At the 12th Miss Payton was on the green alongside the pin with her third and having a 3ft putt, with two for a win, she played safely, sinking in 5 to Mrs. Mander’s 6, Miss Payton thus annexing the championship—7 up and 6 to play. Miss Payton played splendid golf throughout and bid fair to break 80 for the 18 holes. She already holds the Ellis Cup, which she has now won for the third time.
