NEW GUINEA GOLD
ALL CLAIMS TAKEN RETURN OF MINERS With a shipment of 15,000 ounces of gold, valued at £35,000, the Montoro arrived at Sydney fft>m Rabaul last week. Thirteen months ago the vessel brought a shipment of 16,000 ounces. Officers of the vessel said that, between these two shipments, more than 100,000 ounces of gold, worth approximately £250,000, had been brought to Sydney' from the New Guinea goldfields. Twenty-five miners returne'd on the vessel, the majority of them were unable to obtain claims. They said that at present the holders of the big leases were winning most of the gold, and at Edie Creek there were now only 40 men working claims. By the end of the year it was expected that the number would be reduced to 10. All agreed, however, that the fields were very rich, and had wonderful possibilities for company working.
