NEWPORT DOWNED AN EASY VICTORY By Cable.—Press Association. —Copyright Reed. 11.17 a.m. LONDON, Thursday. The New South Wales Rugby team defeated Newport by 20 points to 3. The ground was sodden. Newport never fielded a poorer side against a Dominion team. Victory was due to first-class scrummaging, hacked up by an excellent scrum-half, the team’s ability to make openings, and the elusiveness and powerful running of Lawton, Towers and Wallace. The score at half-time was 6 —3 in favour of New South Wales. In the second spell play was one-sided, Newport’s tackling being weak.—Sun. The 1905 All Blacks beat Newport by 6 points to 3, and the 1924 All Blacks by 13 to 10.
