FIRE IN NEW SOUTH WALES.— A fire at Manilla, in Darling County, destroyed M. C. McKenzie’s emporium. The damage is estimated at £ 30,000. —A. and N.Z. HANKOW FIGHTING.—A naval wire ess message from. Hankow says a conflict occurred there between Japanese sailors and Chinese soldiers. Firearms, bayonets and machine-guns were Japanese was wounded. The Chinese sustained many casualties. Other reports say the position is serious and that other foreigners will probably be involved. NEW BRITISH CRUISER. —At Portsmouth dockyard on Wednesday Mrs. Donaldson, -wife of Rear-Admiral Superintendent L. A. B. Donaldson, laid :he first keel-plate of the new 10,000-ton cruiser Dorsetshire and sister ship to the London.—British Official Wireless. QUEENSLAND UNEMPLOYED. The annual report of the Unemployed Workers’ Insurance Commission, tabled in the Assembly, show’s that there were 48,980 applicants for sustenance during the year ended on March 31 last. The sum dispensed was £311,833. Receipts for the year totalled £263,523 and disbursements £360,958. The rate of contribution has since been increased to 4d.—A. and N.Z. FLOODS IN AUSTRALIA. —Three and a-half inches of rain fell in the Albany district in 4S hours, causing wash-outs on the railways. Many settlers were flooded out, and much damage was done to roads. Albany *s isolated by rail and road. The King River overflowed its banks, and the water ran as high as the tops of fences. The residents worked waistdeep in the water, endeavouring to save their furniture.—A. and N.Z. PEACE OF IRELAND. —Both Mr. T Cosgrave, and the Irish Republican leader, Mr. de Valera, have been jnvited to attend a conference to be held at Cork on Friday under the auspices of the Harbour Board. It will consider the economic position of the country and the question of conciliation for the unity of the Irish political parties.—A. and N.Z.-Sun. QUEENSLAND LABOUR. The Queensland Trades and Labour Council announces that it has abandoned i-s idea of forming a new industrial i-abour party, and that it has decided instead to bring about reforms in the listing Labour Party.—A. and N.Z.
