Racing at Napier Park To-Morrow
SMALL FIELDS THROUGHOUT WHILE the attention of Auckland’s racing enthusiasts will be focussed upon the Avondale meeting to-morrow and on Monday, the results at Napier Park will be given more than passing attention. The fields for the Napier fixture are reviewed below.
IT is rather extraordinary to find that! for the eifrht events on the pro- 1 rramme for the first day at Napier Park to-morrow the acceptances number cnly 59. and in one race alone the field exceeds eight, while the principal event has attracted five. This will not ensure a successful meeting for the Napier Club, which has been up against it for some time, and from the prospects of its spring fixture looks like getting still further into difficulties. The experiment tried on this occasion of holding the races on Saturday and Monday is likely to prove disastrous. The going at Greenmeadows to-morrow should be fairly good, for the course i 3 well drained. With most of the good horses and riders absent, however, the sport does net appear as if it will prove? very interesting to-morrow, with the outlook poor for the second day, on Monday. The opening event is at noon, this being the prince: of wales handicap 5 furlongs Tojeuma ..85 Tea Miss ..80 Monetise ...85 Sunny H'gh Court . 8 5 Autumn ..80 Raasay ... 8 5 Marsin ... 8 0 This is the second two-year-old race of the season, for it eventuates before the Avondale classic. Tea Miss showed dashing form in the two-year-old parade at Wanganui, and on this effort and the experience thus gained the half-sister (by Tea Tray) to Silver Tray will doubtless come in for heavier support than Raasay, of whom good things can bo expected later in the season. The two-year-olds disposed of, attention will rext be focussed on the half-dozen left in the SCURRY HACK HANDICAP 5 furlongs Mountain Etakaroa ..80 Heath .... 8 0 Cloyne .... 8 0 Clavers ... 8 0 Dreamy ... 8 0 None of the sextette has anything; in the way of performances to its credit, and so this flutter should not take much winning. Torquil and Dreamy are a pair th at appear to have been doing fair work of late. Of better class are the seven left, in the GREENMEADOWS HURDLES 11 miles Feshwa ... 10 13 Braeman ..00 Garzou .... 10 5 Wailong ... 9 0 Ballyfarnon 9 11 Panchito ... 9 0 Raukaponga 9 0 Peshwa is not in the first flight of hurdlers, but he seems to be a class above his opponents on this occasion. Garzou has been mixing it lately, and with the pace on here all the way the Gisborne representative may not be able to go with them. Ballyfarnon’s second arid first at Dannovirke point to an improving sort, and he may be the one to offer most opposition to the top weight. Raukaponga has shown promise? a.t different times. Two that will carry big money are Peshwa and Ballyfarnon. The big event of the day has drawn a miserable response, only a quintette accepting; and here they are: PARK STAKES li miles Tresham ..90 David Garrick 7 0 Bennanee. . . 8 12 Morose ... 7 0 Othon .... 7 5 Tresham raced consistently at Marton and Wanganui, and then let his connections down badly at Dannevirke. The small field to-day will be a lot in

his favour, for he usually has a. lot of ground to make up in the straight. Bennanee ran two good races at Wanganui. being handy at the turn, each day, but lacked the necessary punch to ccme on from there. He should be all the better for those outings. Othon pops up occasionally, but David Garrick ran well at Wanganui without having too much of the luck. Morose completes the field, and success for her would he a surprise. Bennaneo and "renam will probably be entrusted with the confidence of backers. The hack sprinters are to be produced next in the
Essen tial ... 9 0 Chips 8 2 King Midas . 8 12 Singleton ..82 Excess ... 8 10 Polonaise ..80 Abisogne ..87 Heather Blend 7 U
Essential was a winner at Dannevirke. King Midas was a fine two-year-old last season, and if given a chance to develop should come good. Excess was consistent last week, and Abisogne, too, although the latter never seems to do better than second. Chips must be given every consideration, although she let her party down last week. Singleton has pretensions (he has been left in the H.B. Guineas) and Polonaise and Heather Blend can both go fast. Excess and Essential may be the favourites. A high-weight affair follows. This is the
Starboard Passionate . 9 6 Light .... 10 2 Patuki .... 9 2 Lipsol .... 9 9 Watchman ..92 Uoad Hog ..97 Tiiere arc; two that make most appeal. in this company, and they are Starboard Light and Road Hog. The former appears to be well up to weight, while the latter comes to hand early and is likely to spring a surprise in an event of this description. Quite a useful lot of sprinters figure in the
RAILWAY HANDICAP 6 furlongs Licinius ... 9 0 Starboard Kaiti 8 8 Ligrht ... 7 6 Tiega 8 8 Riverna ... 7 3 Rouex .... 7 11 Cool; 7 0 Cosmetic ... 7 6
Licinius has not raced for a long time, but he thrives well on a light preparation. Kaiti ran well at the Grand National meeting and also at Wanganui, and although he falls a bit short of real class he Is more than a useful sprinter. Both Tiega and Rouex may require a middle distance before they will give their bes:, and Cosmetic, Ri verna and Coot are taking on something better than usual. Starboard Light would count a lot of friends if started here. The backers may be found most eager to be on Kaiti and Licinius.
Quite a big field is down to contest the concluding event, the
Vertigern ..95 Jen 7 9 Merle .... 8 13 Toka .... 7 9 Hori 8 9 Ara.by .... 7 7 Gannymede . 8 0 Keen 7 7 Moepai ... 8 0 Rakaroa ... 77 Kongo .... 7 12 Dapper Boy 7 7 The majority of these have not raced for som© time, and although the smaller fields earlier in the day might have suited punters, this event should find them puzzled. Gannymede and Tol<a are a pair that may come in for sound support. The racing at Napier Park to-mor-row and on Monday should serve to throw a certain amount of light on the prospects for the one-day’s racing at Hastings the following Saturday.
