CHARGED WITH THEFT OF 131 LETTERS

POSTAL OFFICIAL REMANDED (Special to THE SUN.) DUNEDIN, Thursday. A middle-aged postal official, with a long record of service, was charged in the Police Court to-day, with stealing 131 postal packets, the property of the Postmaster-General. Chief-Detective Cameron asked for a remand until September 30. When accused was arrested the previous night, said the chief-detective, he had bundles of letters in his possession, some of them torn so as to disclose the contents. There had been several complaints d aring the past two months concerning missing letters. Accused was a married man with a family. Mr, Hanlc-n, who appeared for accused, asked for bail, which was fixed at £IOO, with one surety of £IOO or two of £SO. On the application of counsel the> accused’s name was suppressed until the hearing of the charge.
