VALUE OF MILK DIET
PROVED BY EXPERIMENT BIGGER AND BRIGHTER CHILDREN Bigger and brighter ch Idren develop under the tonic influence of mjlk. Experiments in England definitely established that a daily issue of milk is a stimulant to growth, and to mental and physical activity. The tests were carried out at the Holy Trinity School, Blackburn, which is attended by the children of weavers in the cotton mills, by Dr. W. M. Frazer, M. 8., Ch.B., M.Sc., barrister at law. The children all came from similar surroundings, about half the homes being in receipt of poor relief. Twerty boys and 20 girls, aged from 10 to 15 years, and all definitely undernourished, were selected. For the first three months a pint of milk was;; given to each of 10 boys and 10 girls, twice a day, together with a shredded wheat biscuit. The other 20 children were given two biscuits only. At the end of three months there was a change-over, the second 20 being given milk and the first 20 going or to the biscuit diet.
The girls, in both periods gained approximately twice as much weight while on milk and biscuits than when on biscuits alone. Three discoveries were made. A daily issue of milk to under-nourished children caused a material increase in all the factors
conducing to their physical well-being and good health. It had a general tendency to increase weight and to augment the efficiency of the circulation of the blood by improving the respiratory action of the chest and the quality of the blood. Thirdly, It increased the vigour and alertness of each child.
This table shows the average increase in weight registered: On Milk. Biscuits.
