MAN WHO PLAYED JONES
WHAT HAPPENED AFTER There's not a golfer who wouldn’t rush the chance of a game with Bobby Jones. But what a line of questioning he would have to go through afterwards. Byers, a onetime American champion, played the famous Bobby, and for two years afterwards he was the target for something like this:
'Hullo—there’s Byers.” ‘Tell us about that match of yours with Bobby Jones. Is he ? Was he ? Will he ? etc.”
“No, I hardly think he's a flash in tine pan. Yc*s, he drives quite a long ball. Yes, they say that’s fill he is. No, he didn’t mind the gallery. Yes, his iron shots were very good. Yes, I’d say he's a real player. About 165 pounds—perhaps, so—perhaps only 160. Yes, they say that’s all he is. No, he didn’t miss many. Yes, he layed them well, too. Yes. his putting ind his down swing is flat. "What year did I win the championship? 1906. Yes, I think I could have beaten him then. No, he didn’t Play so awfully well against me. Yes, I ought to have beaten him. Yes, I missed several putts. No, he didn’t fail to sink a. single short one. Yes, he gets a long ball with a roll. Yes, very pleasant to talk to.
“Yes. I should say he might be called ’chatty.’ At the fourteenth in the morning he turned to me and said, ‘Gee ain't golf a slick game?’
“Again in the afternoon going to the fifth he remarked, ‘Gee, I'm stuck on this game. I've been playing it for years and years and years.’ “No, I can t recall that he flubbed even one tee shot.”
