MAORI TAKES BISHOP SEVERELY TO TASK

THE Bishop of Waikato, Dp. Cherrington, was taken to task last evening by a speaker at the Maori demonstration in the Auckland Town Hall. Whare Huia Rangiheuea, a representative of the Arawa tribe, who was a member of a Maori deputation to the Native Minister, Mr. Coates, last year to protest against liquor licences being granted in the King Country, said he could not understand the Bishop supporting such a request. “We all know that the curse of the Maori is drink,” he sai.d, “and here we have a man of God saying, ‘Please Mr. Coates grant licences in the King Country.’ I hope every right-thinking man will support our protest.” “Shame!” was the cry from the audience when the Maori referred to the attitude of the Bishop.
