TRAINING ON HASTINGS TRACK
INTERESTING WORK Reporting last Saturday’s training operations at Hastings, the "Tribune” says that Mountain Heath was first out, accomplishing a useful working gallop. This gelding has a Dannevirke reputation of being *.ble to go last on the track, but not on the day. Dapper Boy got to the end of half a mile in 52sec. M inter, against the bit, took 1.25 for wx. This Kilboy half-brother to Comical and Co. has been sold to Mr. Ri therford, of Canterbury, and will shortly be railed South. Wailong, who is for the time being under T. Quinlivan until, his trainer arrives from Trent ham, ran half a mile in 52Jsec. lie appears a little on the light side for a hurdler. Road Hog, assisted by Clavers for the first four, took 1.20 for six. For the half-mile Clavers ran 51 i when holding a chain lead of Road Hog. Tom Byrne, the brother to Huikai, now held on lease by Mr. Jim Landels from Mr. Taranaki Te Ua wa.s the first out after breakfast, but was pot extended. Bennanee, who catches the eye as being in rare nick, ran a very fair half-mile in 50 4-5. Birklad and Nahi were to have been companions over half a mile, but the former bolted. Nahi ran the distance in 53, and although slow in comparison with other gallops, would have proved beyond Birklad. On the grass (the other gallops being on the plough), Raasay, getting the best of the start, beat Torquil over half a mile in 51, doing it nicely. Old Patuki, who is standing up to his preparation, ran four in 52., going on at the finish. Liaison, with the aid of Hakuwai for the first half-mile, ran five furlongs in 1.4. The King Quex—Lovematch filly is greatly improved by her Wanganui trip. Ganymede was always going easier than Keen in tlieir four furlongs in 51 3-5. With the Dannevirke race Ganymede has improved a lump, and may yet prove a good three-year-old. Black Girl had a slight lead on Royal Court over half a mile, taking 52 1-5. Neither was ridden out. At the same distance Charmaline was too fast for Arrowshot in 52 4-5. The latter was all over the course, running very green. This filly appears very much on the light side, and would probably do better if not asked anything serious until at least the autumn. Watchman jumped a few hurdles, but went too slow to go well. Ho jumped carefully, and in time may do well at this part of the business. An unexpected and unchalle-nged win at a recent meeting caused such elation in a certain Hawke’s Bay racing camp that two acceptance dates and a nomination were overlooked until a day too late. Kinross, if all goes well, will mak' his first public appearance at Trentham next month. The association of trainer Leo Goodwin and owner Mr. P. Annan has come to an c;nd. On Saturday Maj'surd and Irish Court were taken over by V. H. Colello, who once before trained for the same owner, winning a couple of races with Diamond Nap..
