UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF NEW TRAFFIC OUTLET At a meeting: of the Newmarket Borough Council last evening, a letter was received from the Public Works Department stating that it was found that the proposed unemployment relief work in Mortimer Pass is being carried out by the City Council. The city engineer stated that he had no knowledge that, this work was to be carried out as relief works. It was decided to abandon the Mortimer Pass scheme and the Mayor and Cr. Hardley were deputed to interview the Public Works engineer to expedite relief works in Carlton Gore Road. A letter received from Mr. F. Appleton stated, that he was prepared to indemnify the council against all claims that may arise out of any accident occurring through the placing of any material by him on the footpath or the roadway.

The town clerk of Auckland wrote acknowledging receipt of a letter regarding the City Council’s proposals regarding sections and fares, and expressing thanks for the action taken by the Newmarket council. A letter was received from the Director-General of Health drawing attention to the non-payment of thtf apportionment of the cost of the recent Water Commission, and asking that the amount due be paid to the credit of Public Account at the earliest possible moment. The Legal and Finance Committee recommended that payment of this amount be deferred until further information is obtained regarding the action taken by the local bodies concerned. A communication was received from the secretary of the Education Board in connection with the proposed new traffic outlet stating that subject to the consent of the Education Department, Wellington, the board wduld approve of the taking of the land required on condition, that the council paid adequate compensation for it. The question was referred to the subcommittee dealing with the proposal to acquire land for the new traffic outlet.
