HISLOP
| VERSATILE ARTIST WITH VOICE OF PUREST QUALITY
A SUCCESSFUL SYDNEY DEBUT Mr. Joseph Hislop made an auspicious debut at the Town Hall last night,” states the Sydney “Sun,” referring to a concert given early this month. “He has a tenor voice; of the purest quality. It is musical, of adequate range, and always at his emotional will.”
It was also stated that the opening song, Beethoven’s “Adelaide,” was sung with great artistry and passionate feeling. Then followed a charming group of songs by Cimara, Lalo and Grieg, all of the same high standard and sung with very fine sentiment. The encore to these was “Reconditu,” from “Tosca,” and there followed a storm of handclapping that was eclipsed only by the applause after the singing of “On With the Motley,” from “Pagliacci.” It was considered that the renditions of these two numbers were the best Sydney had heard for many years. BEST IN OPERA
“Che Gelida Manina,” (“La Boheme," Puccini) was also stated to be a great example of operatic art. Although Hislop sings everything artistically and with perfect finish, it is in the operatic arias that he is at his best.
“Kishmul’s Galley,” arranged by Kennedy-Fraser from “The Songs of the Hebrides,” and “Mary of Argyle” were listed last, and “La Donna e Mobile” was added as an extra.
