CARS OF ALL MAKES AND AGES AUCTIONED

“KNOWING BIRDS” BUY FOR AS LOW AS £l7 “A COUPLE of knowing birds here are going to start a taxi service by putting in a fiver each!” The auctioneer, who had previously been blessing his heart and soul at to-day’s motor-car sale, winked at the crowd as if he had found the solution to the paucity of bids. Ninety-five cars offered by auction by Dominion Motors, Ltd., incorporating Gillett Motors, Ltd., and 20 had come under the hammer by one o’clock.

The first to be driven on to the selling stage was a sporting eight-cylinder Oldsmobile, once the property of Dr. Rayner, and still turning over with a hearty purr. Bids went up slowly to £ 47, at which the car was sold.

A big Chandler tourer, which had withstood the battering of time and roads, did not inspire confidence. The buyer got “her” for £l7. Though, it had run on to the stage nicely, the engine refused to start going down the incline. The cranking handle did no good and the car had to pushed ignominously away—justifiable peevishness at the price, probably. An address on the value of one’s convictions and the importance of saying “come in” to opportunity failed to collect anything more than £24 for an Overland tourer.

Two Essex coaches, both as good as new, brought £2OO and £175, one being a 1927 model and an Essex tourer .reached £llO.

The biggest price of the morning was given for a new Hudson fiveseater, 1926 model, which brought £4OO, and the next highest bid was £340 for a new Bean roadster. Another lumbering Chandler tourer went for £2O, the auctioneer declaring that one needed only to run it to the races in order to pay for it and get a bank balance besides. Smug in new paint a Ford brought £4O and a 1926 “new beauty” went for £76.

Other prices were: Studebaker tourer £2O, Durant tourer £IOO, Bean tourer, a demonstration car, £242 10s, Bellsize tourer £127 10s, Hupmobile tourer £7O. _
