DESPERATE PLIGHT

SETTLERS IN RIVERINA HEAVY DROUGHT LOSSES By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Reed. 10.20 a.m. SYDNEY, To-day. The serious position of a large number of small graziers in the northern Riverina district was set out by a deputation which waited on the Undersecretary of Agriculture, to discuss means for drought relief. The affected area is over 4,000 square miles. One member said the present season was the worst he had known during 36 years residence there. He did not believe a single bag of wheat could be gathered in the whole area. Settlers in these districts had been carting water for 18 months, fodder was practically exhausted, and stock was dying off fast. The farmers had all they could do to keep their horses alive so that they could carry out next years seeding. Many storekeepers had had to close down.—A. and N.Z.
