Fast Gallops at Wanganui on Saturday

Lysunder and Damaris Do Fine Trials THE FLYING CIVILITY (Special to THE SUN.) WANGANUI, Monday. xne fact that those Wanganui horses engaged at the two important fixtures at Ellerslie, the Avondale and Auckland spring meetings, would be leaving on the trip North to-day, meant that their final gallops on the Wanganui tracks would have taken place on Saturday. Consequently there was much attention riveted on their efforts prior to leaving. GOOD TIMES That all candidates for Ellerslie honours are well forward, and greatly benefited by their racing at the Wanganui fixture, was evidenced by the smart times recorded by several of them on Saturday, Lysander and Damaris in particular showing decided improvement. The weather was again beautifully fine, and the track in such good order as was conducive to testing the watches, when Walter Rayner made his usual early appearance with a team of half a dozen. These got through their tasks about six o’clock, at which hour the tracks might have been the best part of a second slower than they would have been after the breakfast would be after the breakfast interval. THREE GOOD ONES TRIED Mask (ridden by Rowlands), Damaris and Thaw (both of which had lightweights in the saddle) were responsible for the first effort, this being over six furlongs. After the trio had gone once round on No. 2 track at a steady pace, they hopped off from the six-furlong peg, Damaris having if anything the best of the jump- off. Travelling the right way round, the first furlong was cut out in 12 4-5, the first quarter took them 24 3-5. That the pace was on may be gathered from the fact that three furlongs were left behind in 38 4-5, the half-mile occupied 50 1-5, with Damaris fairly bounding away at the finish, fully a length ahead of Mask. The time regisered on "the journey was 1.16 4-5, Thaw being a couple of lengths in the rear . other pair. DAMARIS IN FORM It was a good display on the part of Damaris, and with a gallop in the Henderson Handicap next Saturday she should be in fine trim to give Laughing Prince and the remainder of the three-year-olds something to ponder about in the Avondale Guineas on Monday next. Mask was doing it easily at the end of the gallop, being on the outside and well out all the way, and will be well supported from here in the Avondale Cup. Thaw, of course, is well known as a lazy worker, and it occasioned no surprise to find him in the rear, but he went well nevertheless, and will be a useful member of the team. NICE YOUNGSTER The strikingly marked Episode, engaged in the Avondale Stakes and A.R.C. Welcome Stakes, had Co vent Garden to bring her along over three furlongs, but owing to the fact that the filly was smart to find her feet, her companion was not of much use to her. Episode hopped oft at the three furlongs a little ahead of her companion, to run the first furlong in 13 4-5, and the next two in 25, making 38 4-5 for the journey. Considerin the fact that the juvenile parade on the opening day of the Wanganui races was the first time that the daughter of Limond and Homage had been allowed to stride along, she is making wonderfully good progress, and by the time the Welcome Stakes come up for decision on October 8 she will show a decided improvement. Perhaps it is a bit early in the season to predict, but it should be jotted down now that she should be kept in mind for the Great Northern Foal Stakes and races of a similar nature. LYSANDER’S EFFORT These five being disposed of, Lysander was next to be given a task. His proved worthy of the wait. Like the rest of the team his gallop was done the left way round, in contrast to the reverse going that had been the case with Rayner’s candidates on previous mornings. Fighting for his head, Lysander was allowed to break into his stride before reaching the four-furlong post, which would account for the 12 2-5 recorded for the first furlong. Hitting out in his best style, the son of Absurd and Pennon got to the end of the quarter in 24 2-5, and came home well over the final stages to record a tick over 50, an effort which would tend to indicate he is fast getting back to that form which enabled him 12 months ago to dead-heat with Commendation in the Avondale Guineas. He has lost a good deal of that bulky middle piece he was carrying just prior to the Wanganui meeting, and if looks go for anything he. will not return from the trip to Auckland without paying expense AVONDALE CUP CANDIDATE After breakfast Alloway was the first to be galloped. He was sent six furlongs the reverse way, cutting out the journey in 1.17 2.5. After doing the initial half-mile in 50 2-5. It was ap-

parent that he was doing it comfortably at the finish, and the son of Limond and Admyra would not lose any friends for his Avondale Cup engagement as a result. Kiosk was another to toe sent the reverse way, his task being a journey from the wanning post to the four furlongs on number one track. a bit sluggish to move over the first part of his task, running the first quarter in 28 the next furlong being covered in 12 1-5, making 40 3-5 for three furlongs. Striking out well over the concluding part of the trip he recorded 52 2-5, evidence that his outing in the Flying Handicap at Wanganui had done him no harm. More good races should come the way of the Tea Tray—Rosie Desmond four-year-old. FAST TIME BY CIVILITY It was left for Civility to register as usual the best gallop of the morning, and her owner was present to see her run four furlongs, and he could not be otherwise than pleased with the manner in which she cut out the journey. After trotting round once on number two tracks Civility set out from the four-furlong peg, to run the last furlong in 12 2-5, the quarter in 24 3-5, coming home over the final quarter in 24 1-5, to record 48 4-5 for the full journey. That she will take a power of catching in whatever she attempts at Ellerslie next month there can be little doubt, and the game little mare has rcorded about her best performance on the Auckland Club’s course. It would recorded about her best performance on evidence at the spring fixture. Star Area was sent over six furlongs and was timed over the last five, the first quarter taking 25 1-5, W’hile he got to the end of three furlongs in 37 3-5. The final two furlongs occupied 27 2-5, making 1-5 for the journey. Paleta, Bank Note and Liilfesa were among the number to do useful w r ork. NOVICE HURDLER

A very interesting bout over hurdles was provided by Elysiancr and Atene, who were sent to jump six of the obstacles. That the former has both pace and jumping ability he demonstrated the other morning, and again on Saturday lie negotiates! tLe battens

with marked proficiency. His young rider gave him his head at the jumps, and he simply flew the hurdles, while Atene was not much use to him. It would be pleasing to record the fact that Wanganui sheltered another hurdler of the class of some of the oldtime jumpers once owned in this district.
