THE PIG INDUSTRY
EXPORTS FROM DOMINION HOME MARKET’S NEEDS 'From Our Own Correspondent) PALMERSTON NORTH, Monday At the annual meeting of the Ncrtk Island Dairy Companies’ Pig Co-crtra-tion, held in Palmerston North on Tiareday. Mr. H. McManaway, of Bulls, who recently returned from a trip to the CM Country, stated that he had noticed that New Zealand pigs had not been on-ex-hibit on the Smithfleld market and, on making inquiries for the reason, be lud been informed that it would coat approximately 6 per cent, extra to do so, which would not be recouped by the better selling price which would be obtaiced. Thorn was no doubt that last reason the Home market bad been flooded with pork, acting greatly to the detriment of the Dominion. Then again the sixe of the pigs exported from the Do mink n had not been suitable and it was evident that what was required by London butcher* was a pig weighing from 60 to 801 b. with baconers between 140 and 1701 b. It seemed, added the speaker, that producers would haw to get their porkers in earlier to suit the export market’s requirements. He was confident that, yen with ti e prices that' would be obtaiJ«d this season for pork, it would pay the producers to export. More co-opera Lot was, however, required, and It was up to the farmers to support the orgaui»tj*t which he thought would be the sahratlaa of the trade. There was no doubt uat there was a future at Horae for Zealand’s pork.
