MISSION SHIP AND MARTYR-BISHOP

SOUTHERN CROSS SAILS

On this day, the 56th anniversary of the martyrdom of Bishop J. C. Patteson at Nukapu, the Melanesian mission steamer Southern Cross casts off for her voyage to the islands of the Pacific.

The steamer left at two o’clock, carrying two missionaries, the Rev. R. C. Rudgard and the Rev. A. E. Teall. both of whom have been in England on furlough and are returning to their stations in the Islands. This will be the Southern Cross’s last voyage this year. She will touch at the New Hebrides, Samoans, Banks. Torres and Solomon Islands, and is due back in December. A dismissal service for the ship was held at St. Mary’s, Parnell, this morning by Archbishop Averill. Reference was made to the death of the flr*-t Bishop of Melanesia and a collection was. taken up in aid of the mission .5 funds. -
