Mussolini Busy Lowering Salaries
STATE SERVANTS’ PAY PRIVATE FIRMS FOLLOW SUIT By Cable. —Press Association.—Copyright Reed. 10.50 a.m. LONDON, Monday. The Rome correspondent of the Central News Agency says that, having stabilised the lira, Mussolini is now devoting his attention to administrative economies. His first move is a reduction of State servants’ salaries, amounting to £3,500,000 annually. Banks and private firms followed suit with cuts of from 15 to 20 per cent. The basic industries and agriculture next followed, with graduated reductions.
In order to avert hardship to the workers, the proposals will also affect doctors, lawyers and journalists. When the economy is completed, it is estimated that the Exchequer will benefit by 2,000,000,000 lire each year. —A. and N.Z.
