Exciting Racing at Wellington

CHAPTER OF RECORDS (Special to THE SUN.) WELLINGTON, Saturday. THE Wellington Trotting Club’s fixture, which was held at the Hutt Park, proved a chapter of records. There was a record attendance, record weather, record totalisator turnover and in some instances record racing. Tnr machine handled £29,130 for the day, compared with £20,089 10s last year, a splendid increase of £9,040 10s.

THE Novice Handicap provided a hard finish between two three-year-olds in Daphne de Oro and Jean McElwyn. The pair entered the straight clear of their opponents, Jean McElwyn being then in the lead, but after a punishing contest over the concluding furlong. Daphne de Oro beat her opponent by half a length. Both are high-class fillies and are bred in the purple. Daphne de Oro is by Logan Pointer or Rey de Oro from a classic winner in Doraldina, Jean McElwyn’s parents, Nelson Bingen and Miss Spear, being importations from America. The Aucklander, Great Eyre, was first away, but compounded after leading for a mile and a-quart€:r. The coupled horses, Bankhead and Quality, carried most money, but they both failed to leave the mark properly and Tracey Boy, Black Palm and Dick Logan also went to a break when the tapes were released. Golden Morn, Sailor Boy and Trumpeter were well enough placed for a mile, but failed to como on. Wakefield made a good effort over the last half-mile to finish third. Sadie Huon, who was badly placed over the first mile, made up a good deal of ground in the last la.p to finish in fifth position. She is a good mare. LITTLE JOHNNY GOES NICELY Aided by Sarsaparilla and Hardy Grattan breaking in the first two furlongs of the Petone Handicap, Little Johnnie got a big break on the field, of which Lady Fan, Nelson McKinney and Katute were most prominent. With a round to go Cannonball improved ills position, and as they raced along the back Lady Fan went to the front, and proceeded to open up a gap from Little Johnnie, with Ivatute and Cannonball putting in strong work. Rounding tlie far turn Katute took second place with Cannonball on her wheel. At this stage the pair was fast closing on Lady Fan, and looked certain to overhaul her. Just as the two reached the mile and a-quarter disc, they broke, and Little Johnnie came along to take second place. Lady Fan was well clear when she entered the straight, but in the race home Little Johnnie wore her down, and won by a length. Sarsaparilla, Hardy Grattan, Count Dee and Wild Lad all ruined their prospects early in the race by going in the air. The winner, who was one of the outsiders of the party, is trained by A. Hendricksen and is owned by Mr. J. Fairburn. Little Johnnie is an aged gelding by Harold Dillon from a mare by King Cole. KYANA WINS EASILY J. J. Ivennerley’s aged gelding Kyana led all the way to win the Borough Handicap pretty easily. He hails from Australia, being by Dick Alto from a Golfer mare. Chimer began like a shot out of a gun, and with two furlongs disposed of, he was in third place. Then with a round to go he .ran in behind Kyana, where he remained till a mile was completed. Edwards then took Chimer up to Kyana, but when the straight was reached Kyana had administered a kill to Chimer, with the result that Dillon's Pride able to come from a long way back and beat him for second honours. Had Orphan not left his feet 100 yards from the judge ho would have gained second place. Though slow away. Lady Cio paced a good race for 10 furlongs, where she commenced to tire. The Auckland filly Bonniewah failed to begin pacing, and lost whatever chance she had. Epigram was slow to find his feet in the first furlong. He put in some good work going along the back, and was going well in fourth place at the finish. NATIVE STAR MAKES GOOD Cannonball met Native Star and Katute dressed in their Sunday clothes in the President’s Handicap. But for making a bad. break after going a furlong. Cannonball, who joined Native Star and Katute at the turn for home, would have returned one of the dividends. The effort to make up the lost ground took the polish off him, and he faded in the straight and followed his opponent home to secure third money. Nelson McKinney made the pace for seven furlongs, where he lost his balance. Native Star then took charge, followed by Katute. Half a mile from home Csnnonball drew into third place, and the trio drew right away from Little

Johnnie. Native Star finished particularly well, and was going strong when the line was crossed. She is a well-bred mare, being by Native King from Muriel Star, and though trained at Palmerston North by W. A. Price, she was driven by M. B. Edwards. CERTAINTY GOES UNDER Sahib was regarded as a certainty for the Stewards’ Handicap. He missed the jump out. but when the stand was reached, he was in second place. Going along the back he made a big effort, but nothing had any chance with Caprice, who led all the way, and just laughed at the opposition. Zolock Palm and Double Event went to a break at the start. Lady Barrister, Pointalena, Stan Wilkes, Hoon Hay and Kotuku Jack w r ere all well enough placed with a round to go, but when the judge came in sight they were in trouble. The winner is trained at Woodville by R. Tapp. Slie is an aged mare by Wildmoor from a Wilkin mare. HOT FAVOURITE SCORES The Derby colt Vestas was sent out a hot favourite for the Wellington Handicap. He behaved well at the barrier and began like a veteran. When a furlong and a-half was covered he dashed into the lead and, pacing in attractive style, he remained in front all the way, to score an easy victory from Kyana, who was too good for Sungleam. Nellie Parsons broke early in the race, and was soon at the rear of the field. Kyana, who was penalised 36 yards for his win earlier in the day, went a good race, but had no chance with the Great Northern Derby colt. Vestas is by Matchlight from Imperial Fan and is owned by Mr. G. J. Barton. He is trained by W. J. Tomkinson.
