CAR SOMERSAULTS
WHANGAREI ACCIDENT SCHOOLGIRL’S NARROW ESCAPE (Fi'om Our Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, To-day. Skidding in loose metal, a motorcar containing a number of visiting schoolgirls somersaulted twice on the Waipu Hill yesterday afternoon. A number of girls from St. Cuthbert’s College, Auckland, visiting Whangarei with basketball and hockey teams, were taken on a tour of the district, several car-loads making a trip to Ruakaka. While on the return journey a car driven by Jack Millington skidded on loose metal coming round the Waipu corner, somersaulting twice. The six occupants, including four girls, had a narrow escape from serious injury, but Muriel Millington sustained a broken wrist and a wound in the head. The car was in the centre of the c ®P v °y» and proceeding at a quiet pace when the back wheels skidded. After the first somersault the car steadied momentarily, and all the girls but one jumped out. Miss Henderson, however, threw herself on the floor of the car and took another journey in the air. Luckily she sustained little injury.
Child Badly Burned.—As a result of her clothes becoming ignited while she was playing with methylated spirits. Antonia Cockburn, aged eight, of Buckland’s Beach, was severely burned. She was rushed to the Auckland Hospital by motor-car. It was stated this morning that she is in a serious condition.
