WEEK-END FIRES
FOUR SMALL OUTBREAKS Four small fires, two in chimneys and two in wash-houses, broke out during the week-end. A mattress in a detached washhouse at 14 St. Mary’s Road, Ponsonby, was found to be on fire when the city brigade turned out in answer to call at 10 p.m. on Saturday. The wash-house was not damaged. The house is owned and occupied by Mrs. M. Burnes. A heap of hot ashes on the floor of a wash-house at 5A London Street, owned by Messrs. Alley Bros, and occupied by Mrs. C. Williams, set alight to the flooring about 5.50 p.m. on Saturday. The City Fire Brigade soon extinguished the blaze, slight damage only being done. Fire broke out at noon on Sunday in the chimney of a five-roomed house at 182 Symonds Street, owned by the Bank of New Zealand and occupied by Mrs. Billington. Little damage was done to the building. A chimney fire at 4.5 p.m. on Saturday at 62 Vermont Street, in the house owned by Mr. H. M. Griffiths and occupied by Mr. T. Ford, was easily extinguished by the city brigade.
