LABOUR’S CAMPAIGN
ADDRESSES AT WAIUKU THE BANKS ATTACKED (From Our Oton Correspondent) WAIUKU, To-day. Unemployment would be solved in a large measure if the farmers had cheap money to develop primary’ industry. said Mr. Lee Martin. Labour candidate for Raglan, at his address at Taukau last evening. He attacked the Associated Banks for raising the rate of interest from fii per cent to 7 per cent. During the depression the banks pik'd up huge profits and paid enormous didivend He then attacked the new Customs schedule. The benefits were all to the good of the bigger man.
In support of Mr. Lee Martin. Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P. for Manukau, criticised the Government forces for their attack on him. Their saddling him with the remarks about “whining farmers” was a poor stroke of political propaganda. Both he and the Labour Party had always the interests of the farmers at heart. Following up the criticism of the Associated Banks he said that their profits went out of the country to big meat concerns in Argentine to compete with New Zealand produce. There were about 200 at the meeting, and a vote of thanks and confidence was passed with some dissenting voices.
