A. B. CHAPPELL WINS GRAMMAR STEEPLECHASE
200 BOYS FACE STARTER The annual steeplechase of the Auckland Grammar School, contested yesterday under favourable weather conditions, was won by A. B. Chappell, a sixth form boy, in 16min 41 l-ssec. Chappell ran a well-judged race throughout, winning comfortably by 7 4-ssec, and carrying off the open championship. His time was 17 4-ssec outside the record of 16min 23 2-ssec, established by E. S. Thomas last year, and compares favourably with open performances in past school events.
T. O. Brady, who filled second place, also ran a good race. T. Steha, who is under 15, put up a fine performance to win the championship under 17 years, in 18min.
The 200 boys competing all left the mark together, the race being run as a sealed handicap. The first five competitors to finish were:—A. B. Chappell, 16min 41 l-ssec, 1: T. O. Brady, 16min 49sec, 2; A. N. Reid, 17min lbsec, 3: V. Mclnnes, 17min 43sec, 4; E. Wilson, 17min 55see, 5. Subject to revision, the championship results are:
