MOTOR-CARS AND MONEY
A QUESTION OF INCOME HOW MUCH IS NECESSARY? By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright LONDON - , Thursdaj r . The dictum e of an English CountyCourt judge that nobody is Justified in owning a motor-car whose salary or income is less than £1,500 a year has aroused a sharp controversy, Mr. H. Gordon Self ridge, a wellknown business man and motorist, expresses the opinion that a caCreful man with £.n income of £SOO a year can safely invest in a motor-car. Sir Josiali Stamp, the noted economist, says it should be possible for a man with £6OO or £7OO a year to run a car, but below that other claims on income ought to come first. Officials of the Automobile Association say thousands of the members of that body do not earn £SOO a year. A second-hand car can be purchased for £SO, and a man, his wife and family (ran enjoy an astonishing amount of pleasure for 4(>s a week. There are 200 omnibus drivers in London alone who own motor-cars. They say they have given up paying doctors’ bills and now spend their money in running their cars.—A. and N.Z.
