LABOUR LEADER DEFEATED

Jlp Cable.—Press Association. — Cooyrltj.it Reed. 1.30 p.m. DUBLIN, Friday. Early returns in the Irish Free State elections contain some surprises, the most notable of which lithe defeat of the Labour Leader, Mr. T. Johnson.

President Cosgrave headed the poll in Cork City. Es-Lord Mayor French (Republican) was second.

In North Dublin, General Mulcahy (Government), Alfred Byrne (Independent), and James Larkin (Indepenlent Labour), were elected

In South Dublin (seven seats), S. Lamass (Mr. De Valera’s chief party agent), Dr. Hennessy, and J. W. Beckett (Government candidates) were elected. Mr. Ernest Blythe (Minister of Finance) headed the poll in Monaghan. Frank Aiken, Mr. De Valera's chief lieutenant, header: the poll in County Loutl. displacing the Governmen Member who was elected in June. Captain Redmond has been elected for Waterford, where two De Valerates and one Government candidate vere also returned. The Labour Leader, Mr. T. Johnson vaa defeated for Dublin County. Seventy per cent, polled in the Irish elections. Early reports from all over he country indicute that the Government candidates are doing well. Many voters spoiled their papers by writing their views on them. A North Dublin elector erased the candidate’s names and enclosed a )hotcgraph of the Prince of Wales, ntcr.bed, “God bless him." Another wrote punninglv, “God keep si from Devil Era.” Many demanded a return to British Sovemment. The election candidates comprise: Government 87 Fianna Fail 88 Labour 28 Farmers 20 National League 31 Independents 31 A heavy poll was recorded in Dublin, Cork and other large towns.
