A SET OF THREE
THE LITTLE THEATRE The Little Theatre's “set of three” attracted another enthusiastic audience last evening. Acting honours must be accorded to Miss Peggy Hovey for a magnificently restrained piece of work in Barrie’s “The Old Lady Shows Her Medals,” and to Mr. J. D. Swan, who played opposite, as the film folk have it. Barrie is at his sentimental best in this charming little play, and it can honestly be said that its produstion and casting would have put many a professional production “to the blush.” The “Old Lady’s” cronies, Mrs. Mickleham, Mrs. Twymley, and the Haggerty Woman, companions in many a cheerful and tearful gossip over a “cupper tea,” were effectively and amusingly presented by Misses Dupree, Phillips and Carte-Lloyd. Helen Simpson’s quaint conceit, “Pan in Pimlico,” was another delightful fragment. Miss Linda Murphy has an extremely pleasant speaking voice and can act. Her Cockney accent was excellent. Mr. Arnold Goodwin, too. was consistently good. Miss Croslier (syrinx in hand) and Miss Wright were two sprightly fauns. Christopher Morley’s droll little play “Rehearsal” was presented by Misses Marie Gaudin, Joy Bartley, Audrey Perry, Ysolinde McVeagh Molly Overton and Biddy Philcox. Some of the portly Christopher’s sprightly humour was lost in this production.
Mr. Kenneth Brampton may claim added laurels for so excellently-varied a programme. The Little Theatre Society is indeed an asset to Auckland. Where, otherwise, would we use productions of this calibre?
