RAILWAY WORKSHOPS RUGBY MATCH
PETONE V NEWMARKET A DRAWN GAME The annual football match between Petone Railway Workshops and the Newmarket Workshops for the Myers Cup was played on the Domain this morning before a fair crowd of spectators. A very interesting game was witnessed. Newmarket kicked ofi! with the wind against it, and Petone attacked at once and was having the better of the game. Five minutes after the start Cameron, the Petone captain, was carried off, apparently badly injured. He was replaced by Slaven.
Brisbane, at centre, broke right through the Petone defence, making the opening for Lockie to score in the corner. The kick was charged down. Newmarket 3, Petone 0.
Petone was having the better of the game. Newmarket was penalised for offside, and Ormond equalised with a fine kick. The half-time score was three all.
Petone went straight to the attack in the second spell and had Newmarket doing its best to keep the visitors out.
From a mark in a good position Te Puni goaled and made the score Petone 6, Newmarket 3.
The game veered up and down the field. Potts, an auburn-haired forward, was at the head of all the Petone rushes and was well supported by Ward. Feeney, playing at half, was also showing good form. From a free kick Dyett kicked a goal, making the score six all. The game ended soon after, with the score unaltered and Newmarket retains the cup for another season.
Mr. Sweeney, who controlled the game, gave general satisfaction.
