REFEREE!
Louie Long and Jack Perry, in the days of long ago, were breaking the pugilistic ice in a Western farming town.
As there had never been any fights there, none of the citizens w r as competent to referee. The promoter, w T ho had read accounts of several fights, selected himself for the office.
The spectators had seen no lights previously, and therefore, were not a critical audience —which was fortunate for the fight was a “schlinter.” The promoter-referee, being a beginner. was not certain of his duties. Long slapped Perry on the back, and the referee warned him: “Long, you stop hitting in clinches! You can’t do that.”
Louie feigned amazement. “Oh, yes, w r e can, sir. We can hit in clinches, a little bit,” he protested.
“All right, then, but see that you don’t overdo it,” warned the official uncertainly.
