Soccer Championship
PROSPECTS FOR TO-MORROW Attractive Programme THE closing; stag'es of the senior Soccer championship will continue to-morrow at Blandford Park, when two games with an important bearing on the competition will be played. Shore will play its final game with Ponsonby, and endeavour to maintain the lead now held over Thistle who play Northcote in the preliminary match. A win to Northcote and Shore will mean that Thistle has to play two more games, and complete its championship series. On the other Domain the Ponsonby junior eleven meets Birkenhead in the Dacre Memorial Cun final.
THISTLE v. NORTHCOTE Owing to frequent interruptions in the championship series Shore has played two games more than Thistle in the competition, and with two good wins has now assumed the top of the table position by one point. Thistle is determined to regain the lead it has lost for a time, and will probably field the original team which remained so long undefeated. Hislop and D. Stewart are expected to reappear in the forward line, and with Murray Kay again fit and in his best form, the strawberry-growers will need to put their best foot forward to hold the Scots. The Thistle lean, on paper, is a great combination, containing as it does no fewer than eight representative players in the eleven, and everything points to an easy victory for the Black and Whites. NORTHCOTE’S LOSS Northcote has been most unfortunate in losing the services of Lyons, the brilliant young goalkeeper, who was reserve for the Auckland representatives this season. Lyons had to be taken to hospital to undergo an operation for appendicitis, and his many admirers will be glad to learn that the colt is making a good recovery, but football again this season for him is out of the question. Still, the Blues have a very capable substitute in Stott and the Thistle forwards will find him hard to pass. In front of Stott the Northcote players will be at full strength, and after winning from Y.M.C.A. at the last outing the team is hopeful of effecting a mild surprise. The old club has not been favoured with the best fortune this and will make a final attempt to avert becoming the holders of the wooden spoon. SHORE v. PONSONBY The Shore Club has been in a winning vein lately, and after a fine vieSOCCER TEAMS TO-MORROW’S GAMES Following are the teams for tomorrow’s Soccer matches: Senior Division Northcote.—Scott, Taylor, H bbert, Lithgow, Campbell, McGarry, Wellborne, Tremain, Hall, Thompson, Burford. A VALUABLE BAT At the Newmarket sales last month, a cricket bat, autographed by raa ny famous cricketers, was put up for auction in aid of the charity fund in connection with the jockeys and racing Press cricket match at Hove on the Monday preceding Goodwood, states an English paper. The bat was knocked down to Sir V. Sassoon for 35 guineas.
tc-ry over a strong Navy team by 4—l. feels quite capable of checking the "Ponies’ ” series ol wins. The? popular captain, l>an Jones, has returned from South, and will resume his old place, but his side will be without Jay. Whitley and Renshaw. Walters, from the juniors, showed promising form at centre-forward against Navy, and Colebourne will fill the vacancy at half. Harold Smith resuming the l» ftback position. Shore recognises that it has an outside chance ot snatching the championship from the Thistle Club with a win to-mc>rrov.’, and will make a desperate effor to secure tuc full points n the last of the champion ship games. THE CHATHAM CUP FINALISTS Ponsonby has now developed into a splendid combination by hard training and skilled coaching, and will field its full strength again to-morrow, except that Hunter may replace O’Brien in tiie front line. In view of the epp final in Wellington the following Sat urday, the Ponies" have been koepinv very fit, and if weather conditions artonly favourable the game should b«an extremely lively exposition of th«round ball code. Both teams are mostly young and keen players, who have developed a similar style of game, long* passing bouts and rapid rushing raids should make the pace a cracker tomorrow, and the result on form is very problematic. Ponsonby has not tasted defeat for several weeks now. althougi a draw with Y.M. was all it> could secure in the last championship gair.t . while in the last two outings Short* has secured meritorious wins ovt-r Thistle and Navy. On both sides th; defence is stronger than the attack, and it will be a surprise if many goalresult. Staying power will probably be the deciding factor, and in this respect both teams have shown solid reserve strength, and a capacity fo finishing at hammer-and-tongs until the final whistle. BUSINESS HOUSES SOCCER COMPETITION The following are the results of games played this week in connection with the above competition: A Section.— Auckland City Council, 1, v. Farmers’ Trading Compam. 1 . Teachers, 5, v. Tramways. 3. B Section.—Auckland Power Board, 2. v. Abels, L<td., 1; H.?t. Customs defaulted to Auckland Milk Company. These games leave the Farmers’ Trading Company as winners of the A section, and the Auckland l : 'ow«r Board as leaders in the B section. These two teams will meet in the final of the competition on Wednesday next at Blandford Park, commencing at 3.30 p.m., and as both teams include a number of first-class players a good keen game should result. The same teams met in the final last year, when the Farmers* Trading Company became possessors of the Warehousemen’s Soccer Cup for the first year.
