DANNEVIRKE HUNT

ANNUAL RACE MEETING ROYAL DAMON SHOWS FORM (Special to THE SUN.) DAJN'N'EVIRKE, Thursday. The Dannevirke Hunt Club fixture was held to-day in glorious weather. There was a good attendance and racing was interesting. The sum of £8,657 was put through the machine compared with £8,331 last year. H. Gordon received a particularly bad fall when Arataura was killed in the hurdles, but the latest report is that he is progressing favourably. BALLYFARNON'S EASY WIN The withdrawal of Ramblin' Kid and Doyleston from the Ashcott Hunters' Hurdles left only five to contest the race. Ballyfarnon, Calluna and Musical were evenly backed. Panchito led till four furlongs from home, when Ballyfarnon took charge and went away to win by 10 lengths from Panchito, who beat Musical by three lengths, with Calluna fourth. A HOT FAVOURITE Red Fuchsia was backed as unbeatable in the Oringi Hack HurdleS, and there was good support for Mountain Top. Arataura fell at the hurdle in the straight and was killed, being the second horse lost on the course this week, Miss Hupana having .been killed on the flat the previous day. Mountain Top led nearly all the way, but in the straight Red Fuchsia was with her and came home a comfortable winner by three-quarters of a length. Revel was a fair third, and Rukaponga a poor fourth. EXCESS MAKES AMENDS Bettors again went for Excess in the Takapau Novice Stakes, and this time he won. Hodren began well, but Excess soon joined him, a*id the pair led to the straight, where Kindle challenged and headed Excess, but Excess came again and won by a neck. Ring Boy was two lengths away third, and Borseline next. FAVOURITE ANCHORED Banjuke was backed as though the Dannevirke Hunt Club Steeplechase was over, but his 12-stone anchored him. Panchito and 'Frisco Jack were in front all the way, 'Frisco Jack winning easily by 20 lengths from Panchito, who had run in a hurdle race earlier in the day. Risk was a poor third, with Banjuke fourth, and Peep o’ Day fifth. SMART SPRINTER SCORES In the big field for the Rakaiatai Handicap Starboard Light was better backed than Royal Damon, Beaumont and Willow Wai. Lady Ideal was first away, but Willow Wai soon took charge and led from Lady Ideal, Lipsol, Royal Damon, Beaumont and Starboard Light. Royal Damon shot out at the bottom of the straight and won very nicely by a couple of lengths from Willow Wai. Starboard Light was a length away third, and next came Lipsol and Epistle. IMITATION AGAIN Arch Arrow was the choice of speculators in the Kakahukura Hack Handicap. He led to the straight with Rosebush, while Imitation was close up. The finish, however, found him out, and he ..'as beaten some distance from the winning post, where Abisogne was going like a winner, when Imitation arrived with a late run and just got the decision. Rosebush stuck on to finish a fair third. Tanagra was a good fourth, and Fee Simple was fifth. CONSISTENT LADY FAYE The presence of Mr. J. Morris, the crack gentleman rider, on Lady Faye resulted in sending the Day Comet mare out favourite for the Akitio Lady’s Bracelet, but solid backing for Tintoretto made Lady Faye, who won, pay a good price. Lady Faye vras taken to the front at the start and stayed there to the end, winning easily by a length from Tintoretto, with Gordon Swift and Musical next. Musical was very lame on pulling up. DEAD HEAT AND A PROTEST While Cerf, Watchman and Butterscotch were all well backed in the Kaitoke Hack Handicap, the actual favourite was Atareria. ‘Watchman was soon in front with Arateria handy, and Cerf well back. Half a mile from home Atareria dropped back. Watchman entered the straight at the head of the field, but a great finish ensued in which Cerf and Watchman deadheated and Tanagra was a close third. Toka was fourth. A protest was entered against Cerf for interference near the winning post. The pay-out was delayed a long while, but after a lengthy inquiry it was decided to allow the placing to stand.

Tanagra was very lame after the race. Later results: TAKAPAU NOVICE STAKES 5 furlongs 1 — EXCESS, 9.0 -j 4 KINDLE 9.1 .. .. o ! 5 ring boy, 9.0 .. .. '* *. I ; ;; 5!
