“A SURLY WRETCH”
FINED FOR NOT DRILLING COULDN’T LEAVE HIS WIFE “I’m a married man and I can’t leave my wife,” was the excuse made by a defendant at the Police Court yesterday afternoon when he was charged with failing to attend drill. He kept repeating that he was married, and when he was fined £5 he told the magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, that he could not afford to pay it. “You’re a surly, loafing ■wretch/'’ said Mr. Hunt, “and I’m sorry for your wife.” The fine was reduced to 40s.
