KAURI GUM
REVIEW OF YEAR (THE SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. There was little or no change for the better during last year in the kauri gum trade, according to the annual report presented to Parliament by the Hon. A. I>. McLeod to-day. For the year ended March 31, 1927, export amounted to 4,529 tons, of a value of £301,335, an average of £66 a ton. Last year the average was £75 a ton, in 1925 £B2 a ton, and in 1924 £92 a ton. The bulk of last year’s export went to the United Kingdom, which absorbed 2,036 tons, valued at £133,032. Of the remainder. 1,863 tons, valued at £136,397 was exported to the United States. The report states that a solvent has been discovered by which pure resin can be recovered in block form, free of all impurities. Samples of resin produced by this process have been introduced to the varnish trade, and the indications are that there is a ready market for this new-process kauri if it can be sold at prices which will meet the manufacturers’ views.
