DIVINITY STUDENT REFUSES TO DRILL
CASE OF CONSCIENCE HEAVY PENALTY IMPOSED Because his conscience and the law of the country happen to clash, Alan Morgan Richards, a young divinity student, was fined £lO in the Police Court yesterday afternoon. Richards Avas charged with failing to attend drill. A sergeant-major said that Richards refused to parade on account of his religious beliefs. The magistrate, M.r. F. K. Hunt: Can’t you put him on digging or else have him in the ambulance? Richards: I can’t do it. I cannot have anything to do Avith an organisation for the killing of men. The men of war in the court laughed. The magistrate: What are you. doing for a living? “I am studying to enter the church,” replied Richards. “Others go to drill, but he is too superior,” said Mr. Hunt, as he imposed a fine of £5 on each charge.
